Electrical Panel Upgrade — Before You Need It
A 100A panel was designed for a 1970s house. Today's homes run EV chargers, heat pumps, induction ranges, and multiple home offices on the same panel. If you're tripping breakers or adding a major appliance, it's time.
Signs Your Panel Needs an Upgrade
How a Panel Upgrade Works
Load Assessment
We calculate your existing electrical load and your planned additions. This tells us whether you need 200A, 320A, or 400A service — and whether your current meter base needs to change.
Permit Pull
We pull the electrical permit with your city before we start. Panel work without a permit is a code violation that voids your homeowner's insurance and causes problems at sale.
Utility Coordination
We contact Rocky Mountain Power to schedule the service disconnect. On upgrade day, they pull the meter, we replace the panel and service entrance cable, then they restore power — same day.
Panel Replacement & Circuit Transfer
We install the new panel, transfer all existing circuits, label every breaker accurately, and bring any non-compliant work up to current NEC code.
Inspection
A city inspector signs off on the completed work. You get documented, permitted electrical work — which matters for your insurance and for any future buyer of your home.
New Circuits Added (if needed)
We can add your EV charger circuit, generator transfer switch, or dedicated kitchen circuits in the same visit — one permit, one job, one invoice.
Getting an EV Charger at the Same Time?
If you're upgrading your panel specifically to add an EV charger, we handle both in one visit — one permit, one utility coordination, one service call fee. Bundled panel upgrade + Level 2 EV charger typically runs $2,200–$3,500 total. Call for your specific quote.
Common Questions
How do I know if I have 100A or 200A service?
Look at your main breaker (the large double-pole breaker at the top of your panel). The number on it is your service size — 100, 150, or 200. If it says “Federal Pacific” or “Zinsco” on the panel door, call us regardless of amperage.
Will my power be off all day?
Typically 4–6 hours. We coordinate the Rocky Mountain Power disconnect for morning, complete the work, and they restore power by early afternoon. We give you a specific window on the day we schedule.
Do I need to upgrade the meter base?
Sometimes. When upgrading from 100A to 200A, the existing meter base and weatherhead (service entrance cable) often need to change too. We assess this during the free estimate — it's included in our quoted price, not a surprise add-on.
What brands of panels do you install?
We install Eaton, Square D (QO series), and Siemens panels — all UL-listed, code-compliant, and warrantied. We do not install Federal Pacific, Zinsco, or off-brand panels. If you prefer a specific brand, let us know.
Is there any rebate for upgrading to 200A service?
Rocky Mountain Power offers rebates for certain home electrification upgrades. An EV charger installed as part of the project may qualify. We'll walk you through the rebate paperwork after the job is complete.
